Legend has it that a travelling Chinese opera troupe fell ill while performing in Phuket and decided to adhere to a strict vegetarian diet and observe various rituals to honour the Nine Emperor Gods. Miraculously, their health improved, and the festival was born as a way to express gratitude and seek protection from calamity.

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival typically takes place over a nine-day period in the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar, usually falling in September or October. During this time, devotees abstain from consuming meat and animal products and participate in various purification rituals to cleanse the body and spirit.

Central to the Phuket Vegetarian Festival are elaborate rituals and ceremonies performed at Chinese shrines and temples across the island. These rituals include piercing ceremonies, where devotees pierce their cheeks, tongues, and other parts of their bodies with sharp objects as acts of purification and devotion.
